acupuncture | FAQ's

What are the needles like?
The needles are solid, sterile and disposable for one time use only, which helps avoid infection. We discard them after every use. Acupuncture needles are thin as a hair and have a rounded edge; this stimulates tissues rather than punctures them, unlike a beveled edge hollow needle used in blood draws.

Do the needles hurt?
There are different types of needling. The type of needling I perform is gentle. Typically the needle is not felt. Some patients may feel a small sting when the needle is inserted. After that the needle is manipulated to get a “de-Qi” sensation. De- Qi sensation is a mild dull achy feeling that may last seconds to minutes. Acupuncture can have energizing and relaxing effects on the body as well, so patients may feel either after a treatment.

Does insurance cover acupuncture?
Each insurance plans and policy is different. However, many secondary health insurance plans DO cover acupuncture. Please call your insurance company to discuss your coverage and plan details.

Do you have to believe it for it to work?
No. Young children and animals get positive results without knowing about what it’s doing. Similarily you don’t have to believe it works, the results often speak for themselves.
